Do I need planning permission?

As a rule of thumb you can build a conservatory or single storey extension onto the back of your house without planning permission provided: the proposed extension plus any previous extensions don't project more than 4m in the case of a detached property and 3m in the case of a semi-detached or terraced property. 
There are several other factors which dictate the requirement for planning permission.

Do I need building regulations?

Building regulations will be required for a conservatory or extension if: 
The internal floor area exceeds 30 cubic meters. 
The conservatory is to be built on any level above ground floor. 
The roof of the conservatory/extension is less than 75% translucent i.e. glass or polycarbonate. 
The wall area of the conservatory/extension is less than 50% glazed. 
There is to be no physical barrier of external quality separating the conservatory/extension from the original dwelling i.e. window, door or walls. 
A heat source which is attached to the main house system is being installed (Any heating system in an exempt structure should have separate temperature and on/off controls). 
Glazing and any fixed electrical installations in a conservatory should comply with the applicable building regulations (see below). 
Any new structural opening between the conservatory will require building regulation approval, even if the conservatory itself is exempt. 
If the physical barrier i.e. window, door or wall between the conservatory and original house is to be removed, as part of building control approval a SAP test (Standard Assessment Procedure) will be required.

Can I use my conservatory all year round?

The simple answer is yes! 
The more convoluted answer is that it all depends on the quality of the insulation used in the floors and walls as well as the glass and sealed unit technology used. 
How you heat and ventilate the conservatory will also have an impact on how much use you get from it. If you would like to discuss how you can have a conservatory which is comfortable and energy efficient throughout the entire year 
What options do I have for roofing materials?

This question can relate to a few different aspects of the roof. A conservatory can either have a translucent roof (glass or polycarbonate) or a solid roof (tiles or another form of roofing material). 
In terms of cost polycarbonate will normally be the most cost effective with glass or some sort of tiled or other roofing material being of a similar cost. 
Apart from cost, the type of roof material you choose should depend on several factors including which way the proposed conservatory faces in relation to the sun. The proposed use of the room should also be a deciding factor. Our design consultant will be pleased to offer you more advice.
